Bill Boos has received an NSF CAREER award for his proposal: “The Influence of Desert Heat Lows on Monsoon Precipitation”. As NSF says on its website, the CAREER program is one of the “National Science Foundation’s most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.” Bill’s research group at Yale works to develop a mechanistic understanding of the dynamics of Earth’s tropical atmosphere. This NSF award will support research into the recent intriguing finding that the monsoons of Africa, South Asia, and Australia may be influenced by air originating from the deserts of each of those continents. The award will also support development of a weather and climate module in a summer science program for local high school students, and construction of an informational website focused on a monsoon forecasting contest.
