The AGU was established in 1919 by the National Research Council, and has grown to be the largest and most influential geophysical organization in the world with 62,000 members. From the AGU website: “This special honor recognizes scientific eminence in the Earth and space sciences. It acknowledges Fellows for their remarkable contributions to their research fields, exceptional knowledge, and visionary leadership. Only 0.1% of AGU membership receives this recognition in any given year.”
